English script

“What if I die tomorrow?” Whenever I ask myself this question the thing I’m afraid of the most isn’t my own death, but the idea of being unable to protect the one I love just because there is no same-sex marriage in Japan.

I got married to my American husband over in the US but he is still not considered my spouse here. That’s because in Japan the spouse of a man can only be, legally speaking, a woman. And the spouse of a woman can only be, according to current Japanese laws, a man. No exceptions.

(Why did I apply for MGJ? Because I want to raise awareness about what’s going on in Japan right now. )

From the time I decided to buy a house to live with my husband in Japan I noticed that the responses from the real estate agents, banks, and government offices I talked to made me feel like this country won’t even recognizde our existences.

All because the law does not recognize our marriage.

Unlike other countries there is no war in Japan and people don’t usually die from gun violence every single day. But despite this I am honestly still worried about living in Japan the way things are now.

When I decided to run for MGJ I realized I could become a role model, someone who’s in a same-sex marriage who can be a messenger showing why marriage equality is so important. During the course of this contest I made a will, set up inheritance for my assets, and set up life insurance, and the knowledge  I learned through these experiences will serve me well if I’m able to be the next MGJ.

In connection with my activities as MGJ I would also like to spread this message of marriage equality through my stage plays and short films.
